Santa’s Helpers began in 1968 when our founder, Rita Swiener, heard from a professor about a poor family that had fallen through the cracks of social support, and would not be helped over Christmas. She and a few friends sprang into action with gifts for every member of that family.
Since that day, thousands of children have had a Christmas visit from Santa, bearing personalized gifts for them and their family.
“When I walk into those homes and see the joy on those little faces and the tear in their mothers’ eyes- I don’t know how I could ever stop. – Rita Swiener
A 100% volunteer, not for profit organization that spends the entire year collecting gifts and distributing them to needy families for Christmas and Hannukah.
Last year Santa’s Helpers delivered approximately 26,000 gifts to over 2,000 children and their families in the metropolitan St. Louis area who would not have otherwise received a gift.
Dedicated volunteers start work the day after each Christmas by collecting donations and gifts for the following holiday season.
The families are referred by many sources including:
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Dream Factory through Children’s Shriner’s and Cardinal Glennon Hospitals
Family & Childrens Services
Jewish Family and Children Services
Public School Counselors
Legal Advocates for Abused Women
With the help of individual volunteers, volunteer groups, grade school classes, senior citizen groups and scout troops – the work of Santa’s Helpers will go on.
